Spartans 2 - 4 Glasgow City
Glasgow City remain on maximum points following a 4-2 win over Spartans in the game of the day in Edinburgh.
Spartans opened the scoring through Pauline Hamill. City lost the ball in the middle of the park allowing Spartans to get the ball wide and a good cross found Hamill allowing the the pint sized striker to finish well with a low shot.
City however, soon hit back from the penalty spot, with City and Scotland midfielder Leanne Ross converting after striker Lisa Evans was brought down in the box. It was just reward for the away side, who felt they had been harshly denied a penalty in the opening minutes when Jo Hutchison in the Spartans net, cleaned out City forward Jane Ross, after Ross had headed the ball past the out rushing keeper.
The away side almost took the lead through Suzanne Lappin, but it was to be Leanne Ross on target once more to give her side the advantage. Midfielder Clare Gemmell broke in behind the Spartans defence and cut the ball back to meet the great run of Ross who slid in to put her side ahead.
Megan Sneddon made it 3-1 with a fine 25 yard drive before the break, grabbing her second goal of the season.
Half time 1-3.
In the second half, City controlled the match and created several opportunities, without finding the finishing touch. Things then got worse for Spartans when their right back was sent off for persistent fouling.
Sue Lappin ensured all three points went back to Glasgow with a fourth for City. Jane Ross played in Emma Fernon and the City left back found Sue Lappin who in turn hit the back of the net with a strike from the edge of the box.
Spartans Hayley Lauder was on target with three minutes remaining to get a late consolation for home side. A ball over the top of the City back line found Lauder who rounded Claire Johnstone in the City net, to make the final score 4-2 to City.
City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki commented on the match.
He said, “We controlled the game for long spells although Spartans always posed a threat. We feel a little deflated to lose a late goal, however to go to one of our main challengers and win is pleasing. We know that we were not at our best today, but we are improving with each game and we look forward to next week’s match against Dundee United.”
