Scotland's Euro hopes in the balance

Scotland’s international women’s A squad face two very important games in the space of five days which could ultimately decide their fate in qualification for the European Championships in Finland in 2009.

Scotland travelled to Slovakia earlier in the week in preparation for their match against the Eastern European side on Saturday at NTC Senic, Slovakia at 4pm.

Next Wednesday Scotland face group favourites Denmark at home at McDiarmid Park. Kick Off is 7pm – adults are £3 and concessions £1.

One draw and one defeat in their first two group games leaves the Scots joint third in a campaign where only the top side in the group is automatically guaranteed a place in the Finals. The runners-up and best third places teams will all reach the play-offs, which realistically is where the Scots are aiming for.

Scotland and Glasgow City midfielder Megan Sneddon is well aware of the task ahead. She said, “Saturday’s match is huge for us. Slovakia are two points ahead of us, albeit we have a game in hand, so a win would help us leapfrog above them. I feel we have been extremely unlucky in our previous matches and should have taken more from the games. However, there is no point feeling sorry for ourselves. We must focus on the matches ahead and we are more than capable of putting in two excellent performances and achieving crucial points on the table. If we are to start making an impression in this group we need to win on Saturday and anything against the favourites Denmark would be a bonus.”

On a final note, huge congratulations go to Scotland Captain Julie Fleeting who on Wednesday should pick up her 100th Cap for her country. This will be a fantastic achievement for Scotland’s star player who is still only 26 years old.
