Reserves struggle against Falkirk

Glasgow City Reserves lost a goal in each half on Sunday, going down 2-0 to Falkirk away from home.

With only a few points separating the sides going into this encounter, it was always going to be an even match and both teams enjoyed equal possession in the opening periods. The away side suffered an early blow however, when influential midfielder Debbie Garment had to be substituted only 15 minutes into the game, with a repetitive groin injury that has plagued the City player for most of the season.

City began to dominate possession as the half progressed, but Falkirk were doing an excellent job of preventing City forming any rythmn. The Glasgow side enjoyed the best of the opening chances, all of which were from set play, but they failed to convert the opportunities that came their way.

As has been the case on a few occasions this season, City suffered a sucker punch, when Falkirk took the lead against the run of possession, converting a corner with ten minutes left of the first half.

Half time 1-0

The second half began with the home side continuing to battle for everything and disrupting the fluency of City’s passing by any means possible but effectively.

The game then went away from City when Falkirk scored from another set play to put them 2-0 ahead. Despite the away side’s frustration by the award of a free-kick in the first place, Falkirk capitalised expertly, firing home from the dead ball situation past Nikki O’Donnell in the City nets.

Commenting on the match, City boss, Fiona Baker said, “We struggled in this type of game to be honest. I was disappointed with the level of protection afforded to the players by the referee, but sometimes you get games like this, so we have no complaints. Our form recently has been better, so I was disappointed we did not retain possession better. Fair play to Falkirk. They had a game plan and it worked very effectively. They were able to capitalise on set pieces and quite simply we were not. It was not easy today, but I know we can do much better, so we will focus on this and hopefully we will get back to winning ways soon.”
