Reseves come up short against Cowdenbeath
Having had a break from competition last week, Glasgow City’s Reserves went into Sunday’s match with Cowdenbeath hoping to make more progress after a battling draw and a win against Hearts in previous fixtures. They certainly started well enough moving the ball about and creating chances. Indeed City forward Lyndsey Anderson had a stab at the first decent opening and Debbie Garment came close with an effort not long afterwards. Garment looked to have made up for her earlier miss though after good build up play set her up to finish from six yards but an offside decision which some might have questioned ruled out the goal.
City continued to press for the opening but a break from Cowdenbeath caught out the City defence and a long ball over the top set up a shot from 15 yards to give the visitors the opener. This goal against the run of play gave Cowdenbeath a boost and as a result they pressed forward for the remainder of the half and should really have been 2-0 up going into the break. Some close range saves from Stef Hardie however, kept the visitors to just the one goal at half time.
The second half was very much a repeat of the first with City pushing forward into the opposition area and being caught on the break and indeed it was another long ball forward for Cowdenbeath to make it 2-0. City kept going though and a few chances passed them by until Lesley Palmer, working the ball out of defence, found Maria Welsh who rolled the ball into the path of Lyndsey Anderson to slot home from ten yards. With 25 minutes still left to play another draw or maybe even a win might be on the cards but Cowdenbeath were next to score when they were awarded a free kick. The quickly taken kick went to an opposition forward who took shot from ten yards and Stef Hardie who had done well in the game up to this point, would have been disappointed to have fumbled the shot. City did not give up however, and continued to press right until the final whistle. Despite the Cowdenbeath staff complaining about the amount of time the referee was adding on, the visitors held on for three points.
Speaking after the match Reserves Manager Fiona Baker commented. “It showed today that we had a free weekend last week with the girls passing not at it it’s sharpest. It took us until 50 minutes to look as though we were in full flow, in fact it was only when we went two goals down that we managed to take control of the game, with the away side only managing to break on the odd counter attack, which to be fair, did work well for them today. We had good possession at times and created some decent chances but we couldn't seem to finish, which has been the story not only from today, but for most of our season.”
