Megan Mason promoted to First Team squad
Glasgow City are excited to announce that Under 17 Youth Player Megan Mason has been promoted to the First Team squad for the upcoming season.
The 16 year old striker becomes Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black’s third new addition to the first team for the 2014 season as the Club aims to improve on last year’s achievements.
Commenting on his decision to promote Megan, Wolecki Black said, “One of the main areas I believed we needed to improve was at the top end of the park. We lacked the pace and mobility of previous years and this led to a different playing style and system for us this past season. Megan showed on several occasions last year whilst in our youth set up that she has great potential.
“Of course at the top level it is very difficult for young players to consistently play. We have many young players in our Performance Academy who I believe will play for the first team. However it is much easier to play a young player at the top end of the park rather than midfield or defence. I have witnessed so many occasions over the years of young players rushed into the first team before they are ready. Megan has many attributes and will be a very good addition to the first team. She will bring pace, touch, enthusiasm, mobility and a bit of devilment to the side. It’s true she plays on the edge but that is what makes her different and I look forward to working with her and seeing her establish herself in the first team squad.”
Megan herself said, “I have had an amazing 5 years playing football and I would like to thank previous clubs Celtic and Rangers for their hard work in helping me develop as a player. I would never have had this opportunity if it wasn’t for their help and support in years gone by. I am so thankful to Glasgow City for giving me the chance to first of all play for their youth set up and in doing so they have developed me not only as a player but as a person, on and off the park. To be promoted to the first team is unbelievable and I cannot wait to get started in the New Year to play and train alongside such great players. I am very excited about what the future may hold.”
Glasgow CIty Head of Youth Amy McDonald said, "I am absolutely delighted for Megan. It shows that with hard work and dedication, along with a lot of talent, there can be opportunities at the very highest level for players at this club. Not many 16 year olds have the chance to head to Germany at the end of January and compete in a tournament with some of the very best teams and players in Europe, and that is now what is in front for Megan. Our club does not have a history of simply throwing young players into the first team for the sake of it. It makes these decisions very carefully knowing that it is right for the development of the player and to the benefit of the team itself. But if you look at the list of young players who have turned out for the club with the first team at an age similar to that of Megan you can see what can be achieved. Emma Black, Lisa Evans, Eilish McSorley, Emma Mitchell, Suzanne Lappin, Ruesha Littlejohn, Jane Ross...the list is quite staggering. All of these players have gone on to become senior international regulars and I hope that Megan can one day achieve similar to what those before her have done."
