Laura Montgomery nominated for top award

Glasgow City’s Laura Montgomery has been nominated for the Award of Services to Women’s Football at the SWF Awards Dinner this Friday at Hampden Park.

Founder of the club in 1998 with Chairperson Carol Anne Stewart, Laura has committed the vast majority of her adult life to developing Glasgow City and the Scottish game in general.

Captain of the first team for ten years, until she retired only two weeks ago, Laura has shared every moment of success Glasgow City has enjoyed on the park since its inception twelve years ago. However, it is off the park where her achievements are even more remarkable. As well as combining the demands of training five nights a week with the first team, Laura is the beating heart of the club in everything it does off the park.

“You name it and she does it and if she doesn’t do it herself, she organises the person who does”, is the best way to sum up Laura according to Chairperson, Carol Anne Stewart.

“Laura is in charge of sponsorship, grants and the accounting for the entire club. She also does the club website and all of our media, which sees her write almost on a daily basis to the national and local press. Her media work has undoubtedly not only developed Glasgow City, but the Scottish game in general as she virtually does a one woman job to promote the game in the press. She previews the Premier League matches every week and also writes reports on the results as soon as the matches finish on a Sunday. Whilst most players relax after a hard game, Laura gets the laptop out and emails every single press source with the happenings of Scottish women’s football that day.

“I really cannot surmise wholly what Laura contributes to the game, as to be honest words do not cover it and I have not stated half of it. She has an energy and enthusiasm beyond most people’s wildest dreams and just never stops.  To be honest I am constantly telling her to take a break , as literally she works 24/7 for football, but if she actually did, Glasgow City and Scottish Women’s Football would suffer tremendously. Without a shadow of doubt, Glasgow City would not be close to the club it is today were it not for Laura.”
