It's 10 out of 10 as City defeat Buchan

Glasgow City made it ten wins from ten games as they routed Buchan 13-0 in Sunday’s one-sided SWPL match at Lochinch in Pollok Country Park.

The goals were scored by Denise O’Sullivan (4), Cheryl McCulloch (7, 51, 52, 53), Susan Fairlie (22, 61), Abbi Grant (81) Suzanne Lappin (83, 86, 90+2), Leanne Ross (87), and Leanne Crichton (90+1).

The Scottish Champions wasted little time exerting their superiority and they took the lead after four minutes when Republic of Ireland international, Denise O’Sullivan, slotted home from close range to open the floodgates. This was followed by a superbly-timed glancing header from Cheryl McCulloch after seven minutes that was too powerful for the defender on the line and the home side doubled its lead.

City were cutting open the Buchan back line with slick passing movements almost at will, and they threatened with every venture forward. Jo Love almost netted a spectacular third but her powerful effort from distance crashed off the underside of the bar and away to safety. New recruit, Susan Fairlie, scored her first goal for the club after expertly bringing the ball under control, turning the defence and slotting the ball into the far corner of the net: 3-0 after 22 minutes.

For the remainder of the half, City bombarded the Buchan goal but were unable to add to their tally. Fiona Brown hit the post, McCulloch hit the top of the bar after a neat turn and shot, and Fairley also cracked the woodwork as the Buchan goal led a charmed life.

Six minutes into the second half McCulloch scored her second after she followed up a saved attempt from O’Sullivan when she deftly dinked the ball into the unguarded net. Immediately from the restart the ex-Hamilton player completed her hat-trick with a strike from long range, and remarkably, scored again a minute later when she guided the ball in at the near post to make it 6-0 – her third goal in just under three minutes.

Just after the hour mark, Fairlie notched her second of the afternoon after good wing play and a cutback from Fiona Brown, before Denise O’Sullivan hit the post with a header.

With ten minutes remaining there was no let up from the team in orange and they added a further six goals. Abbi Grant scored the eighth, substitute Suzanne Lappin headed home the ninth and tenth goals and Leanne Ross got her name on the scoresheet with a 20 yard curling right-foot effort that sailed into the top corner to make it 11-0. Leanne Crichton scored the penultimate goal before Lappin completed a hat-trick of headers to make it a lucky thirteen for the hosts.

This was a lopsided contest that was dominated by one team from start to finish, and City’s debutant goalkeeper, Autumn Bonnie Farrell, barely had a save to make. It was a professional and unrelenting performance from the Glasgow side as they clinically destroyed their northern visitors.

Commenting on the win and performance, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “I think we sent the crowd home very happy today. We decided that we needed to freshen things up a little and the team’s performance was of a high standard. We passed the ball with a purpose, created endless amount of opportunities and scored some very well worked goals.

“We knew it was important to play at our tempo and not allow Buchan to get into the game. Our quick start meant that the visitors never got a chance to settle. It was particularly pleasing for Cheryl who has been working hard and to bag five goals will give her great confidence, as it will with Susan who netted her first goals for the club.  Also pleasing was a clean sheet for the team and of course Autumn who was making her debut. We now see our international players depart for their forthcoming games and we wish them well.”
