Holders City progress in Cup

Holders Glasgow City progressed through to the third round of the Scottish Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Boroughmuir Thistle in Edinburgh.

In a match thoroughly controlled by the Champions, the only surprise was the finishing score, which saw City progress with only a two goal advantage. However, despite being pinned back for the entire match, the home side defended excellently and should be proud of their efforts to keep City at bay.

City started the tie positively and good build up down the left hand side by full back Clare Gemmell saw her cross to the back post to Lauren McMurchie, but the young midfielder’s shot was blocked. More good approach play by City led to a great reverse pass from Sue Lappin into the path of striker Kat Lindner, who looked set to score until a last ditch tackle pushed the ball out for a City corner.

More good chances went astray for City in a first half full of action, with a Clare Gemmell strike the pick of the bunch. Some excellent passing across the Boroughmuir box found Gemmell pushing forward on the left hand side and she hit an instinctive first time shot from 30 yards which crashed off the top of the bar.

Half time 0-0

The second half started where the first ended, with City on the attack and it was not long before the constant pressure eventually paid off.  A dribbling run by striker Jane Ross saw the Scotland internationalist brought down in the box for a clear penalty to the away side. Leanne Ross took the resultant spot kick and finished well to put her side ahead.

City then made it 2-0 when a great pass from Leanne Ross found the run of Lindner who crossed to the back post to Lappin, who headed back across goal to Jane Ross who finished from two yards out.

City almost made it 3-0, but the Boroughmuir keeper brought off a fantastic save to push away a Sue Lappin shot after Rachel Corsie had laid the ball back into the path of the City midfielder.

Full time 2-0.

Boss Peter Caulfield said, “I was delighted with the efforts of the players today who passed the ball excellently against a well organised Boroughmuir team who showed great determination throughout.

We are a bit disappointed we could not turn some of our chances into more goals but the worrying thing would be if we were not making the opportunities.”
