City win opening match

Glasgow City started their European campaign in excellent style tonight defeating Irish champions Crusaders 8-0.

Dressed in their new home kit, City started with purpose and moved the ball well throughout the whole match causing their hosts a number of problems.

Midfielder , Clare Gemmell, making her Champions League debut for City, opened the scoring on 12 minutes firing a cut back into the corner of the net from the edge of the box. Three minutes later and City had doubled their advantage when striker Jane Ross drove in from wide and shot across the keeper and into the back of the net.

Just before the half hour mark, Leanne Ross made it 3-0. A free kick from Emma Fernon, found Jane Ross, who crossed for her namesake to score with ease.

Suzanne Lappin put her side four goals in front before half time. Jane Ross crossed for Kat Lindner, who controlled near post and played in Gemmell who set up Lappin and she in turn left footed her effort into the bottom corner.

Half time 4-0.

Fifteen minutes later after the restart, Lindner got on the scoresheet. Receiving the ball on the edge of the six yard box from Leanne Ross, the German striker turned one player, beat another and then shot past the keeper.

Gemmell got her second of the night with a powerful header at the back post following a City corner.

Leanne Ross made it 7-0 to City, converting a Rachel Corsie backheel.

City completed the scoring when Rachel Corsie strode out from the back and played a one two with substitute Ruesha Littlejohn and then fired past the keeper for a good individual goal.

Manager Peter Caulfield was obviously delighted with his side. He said, “We started the game at a really high tempo and set the tone for the whole match. Ultimately the way we played allowed us to dominated possession and create a number of chances which we took. Overall I was delighted by an outstanding team performance by every player in the side.”
