City go top of table
Glasgow City go top of the Premier League after demolishing Aberdeen 14-0 today in the Granite City.
City dominated the match from start to finish with the only surprise being that it took them 17 minutes to open the scoring after going close on countless occasions in the opening period. Striker Kat Lindner was brought down just inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped Leanne Ross to score and to start her own personal rout, which would eventually see her find the back of the net an incredible eight times.
Less than ten minutes later and City had doubled their advantage once more from the penalty spot through Ross, after one of the Dons defenders was adjudged to have stopped a Lisa Evans shot with her hand.
It was soon 3-0 to City with centre half and former Aberdeen player, Rachel Corsie on target. An Emma Fernon corner was flicked on by Evans and Corsie converted well at the back post.
The visitors fourth was arguably the best goal of the day when great team play put striker Jane Ross in to score. Central defenders Corsie and Jill Paterson combined to find Leanne Ross, who in turn played in fellow midfielder Megan Sneddon who hit a defence spitting pass to Kat Lindner and the German born striker crossed to Jane Ross to find the back of the net from just inside the box.
Leanne Ross then got her third and fourth and City’s fifth and sixth of the day within a minute of each other. The first was a chip over the keeper with the outside of her boot and her second was a good conversion after a cross from Evans, whose pace was now causing the Dons defence a host of problems.
Half time 6-0.
It took City five minutes after the restart to add to their lead, with Evans this time on the scoresheet. Jane Ross broke down the right and crossed for Evans who hit a well controlled strike across the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.
Sue Lappin got her side’s eighth slotting home with her right foot at the back post following a Leanne Ross cross.
Scotland midfielder Megan Sneddon was next on target for City with a tremendous 30 yard strike which hit the top corner to get her first of the season.
Leanne Ross got the next two, scoring from ten yards and then beating the keeper on a one on one. Soon after, the midfielder added to her tally to got her incredible eighth goal of the day. Substitute Donna James held the ball up well and played out wide to Evans who crossed for Ross to score at the near post.
James then turned provider to goalscorer to get City’s last and fourteenth goal of the match. Another great run by Leanne Ross put her through on the Dons keeper and she unselfishly played the ball to James to score with ease.
City Manager, Peter Caulfield was unsurprisingly delighted with his team’s performance. He said, “I was really pleased with today’s performance and ho w well we passed the ball. It was the best we have passed the ball for a while and we really dominated the game, creating lots of chances which was great to see. Leanne obviously got most of the goals today and played really well, but it was fantastic to see so many other players also on the scoresheet from all areas of the park. The only disappointing part of today was seeing Jill get stretchered off at the end and we all hope she is going to be OK and makes a speedy recovery.”
