Glasgow City to face Medyk Konin in Champions League last 32
Scotland’s top women’s football side, Glasgow City, have been drawn to face Polish Champions KKPK Medyk Konin in the knock out round of last 32 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Both City and Konin progressed to the last 32 as winners of their qualifying groups and both will be hoping for progression into the last 16, where they will face the winners of the tie between ZNK Osijek of Croatia and FC Zurich Frauen of Switzerland.
Glasgow City will be away from home for the first leg of the two match tie and will play the return home leg on Wednesday 15th October, 7.30pm at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium. Tickets are already on sale priced £5 adults, £2 kids from www.glasgowcityfc.co.uk
Commenting on the draw, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “It is fair to say the overall draw has been kinder to us than in previous seasons. We do not know a lot about the Polish side however we will endeavour to find out as much as possible about them. They dominated their group with emphatic wins over all three opponents and scored plenty of goals in the process. In addition to several internationalists from both Poland and Croatia they have a very talented young striker who is attracting attention from across Europe. Our ex goalkeeping coach Bosko Lucic is on their staff and it will be a familiar trip to Scotland for him.
“It is very difficult to think any further ahead than the last 32 tie and in the past that is what we have concentrated upon. Last year was the same as we knew it was likely that Arsenal awaited us in the next round. I did not want to discuss that potential tie at the time and it will be exactly the same again this year. Last year we did not perform well in Belgium (against Standard Liege) and I hope we have learned from that. We will need to perform at a high standard to progress again this year and if we make it through then we can speak about any potential opponents.”
Konin progressed with ease into the draw for the last 32, scoring 21 goals and conceding only one over three matches. Ewa Pajor at only 17 years old is already one of the main stars of the team and competes for the senior national side, including against Scotland in recent World Cup qualifiers. She is courted by a number of the biggest clubs in women’s football and will be one of the many players City will need to be aware of if they are to progress into the last 16 for the third time in four years.
