City to face Danish side Fortuna
Hjørring in last 32
Scottish Champions Glasgow City FC have been drawn to face Danish outfit Fortuna Hjørring in the last 32 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
City were represented at the draw in Nyon by Head of Youth, Amy McDonald who also witnessed the round of 16, which was drawn afterwards. Should City manage their amazing feat of last year and progress to the final 16, they will face the winners of Spartak Jaffa of Serbia versus Gothenburg of Sweden.
Commenting on the draw, Glasgow City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black said, “There is no doubt that we have avoided what is generally regarded as the big guns. However, this is the knock-out stages of the Champions League and we are well aware that every team is a tough proposition for us. Whilst this draw gives us a chance, we have to bear in mind that we are playing a team with a lot of experience. Fortuna were runners-up in this competition, previously known as the UEFA Women’s Cup in 2003 and have made it through to the last 16 for the past 3 years, only losing out at that stage to former Champions League winners, such as Duisburg and Lyon. They will therefore be playing to protect that proud record. We will need to be at our very best to progress and to be honest there is no point in looking ahead to possible last 16 opponents as there is a lot of work to do against the Danes."
City will line up against Fortuna at their home ground of Peteershill Park in Springburn, Glasgow on the evening of Wednesday 26th September and announcements will be made about tickets shortly. They will play the away leg in Denmark one week later.
However, before City can get too carried away with the Champions League, they need to be at their best for domestic duty this Sunday, when second placed Hibernian come to Petershill to try and reduce City’s lead at the top of the Premier League. Sunday’s match kicks off at 2pm and spectators pay at the gate. £5 adults, £2 concession, and kids are FREE.
