Group stage announced for Meet the Champions Tournament
Hosts Turbine Potsdam have just announced the draw for the two groups in their ‘Meet the Champions’ tournament, to be held in Potsdam, Germany on 2nd and 3rd of February.
Scottish Champions Glasgow City have been drawn in Group A and will face Brøndby IF of Denmark, Djurgårdens IF of Sweden and VV St. Truiden of Belgium.
The indoor tournament is 8 a-side and is the first of its kind ever hosted by Potsdam and is an invitational only event for some of the top nations in Champions League women’s football.
City will play each group opponent twice, before two further placement matches, which will decide the ultimate outcome of the tournament. The group matches will be 12 minutes in duration and the placement matches, 15 minutes.
Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black commented on today’s draw. He said, “The format is very interesting and should ensure a rigorous pre-season workout for the players. The games are certain to be of a high intensity and will require the players to be in good condition.
“We open the tournament against Brøndby the Danish champions who swept aside all before them last season and are currently 5 points clear at the top having won all 14 games so far this campaign. As for the Swedes they appear to be going through a transitional stage, although they will no doubt provide very strong opposition. The Belgians St Truiden are another club who are looking to build for the future, they currently occupy a top 5 spot behind the likes of Standard Liege and Anderlecht. However we know that the standard of teams at this level are very difficult to break down and will require us to be at our best if we are to make an impact.
“Like every other tournament we enter we want to do as well as we can, whilst getting ready for the onset of a new season.”
In the other group, hosts Turbine Potsdam will face AC Sparta Praha, AZS Wroclaw and NöSV Neulengbach.
The tournament is to be played over two days in front of a capacity crowd of 2000 in the new MBS Indoor Arena in Potsdam.
