Glasgow City set sail on Champions League campaign

New kit launch for Scotland’s leading women’s football team

Scottish Women’s Premier League champions Glasgow City today unveiled their new kit as they prepare to embark on their 2013 Champions League campaign.

The club, who enjoyed a 4-0 victory over their closest league rivals Hibernian at the weekend, head for the Netherlands on Tuesday where they will play Croatian champions WFC Osijek, Dutch giants FC Twente and Maltese side Birkirkara in the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The unusual venue for the launch of the new kit was Fairlie Marina where City met sponsor Maritime Craft Services (Clyde) Ltd (MCS) aboard their Multicat MCS Anneke. MCS proudly feature on the sleeve of City’s famous orange and black kit and have backed the team since its inception 15 years ago.

Glasgow City players and internationalists Julie Nelson and Denise O’Sullivan were joined for the launch by Nikki Kuyt, MCS’ Finance Director.

Laura Montgomery, Club Manager of Glasgow City, said: “It is fantastic to have the support of MCS, who have backed us from the very beginning and have seen us grow from one stand-alone team into one of Europe’s top sides and a club with teams from Under 9 right up to our elite first team. It is our pleasure to have the name of their company on our sleeve and they are true advocates for women’s sport and get behind us in everything we do. This is the most exciting time of year for us as we hope to embark on another memorable European journey.”

Nikki Kuyt, Finance Director at MCS, said: “We have a long association with Glasgow City and we’re looking forward to supporting them again as they launch their European campaign this week. Last season was a fantastic one for the team and all the signs are that they’ll repeat that this year.”

Glasgow City is Scotland’s most successful women’s football club and currently boasts 14 full internationalists in their first team squad.

Based at Petershill Park in Springburn, City are the current SWPL champions and have won the title seven times since 2005, including the last six seasons in a row.

Last year the club notched a league and cup treble with wins in the SWF Scottish Cup and the Premier League Cup adding to their title victory. With the Premier League Cup already in the bag for this season and currently leading the title race, Glasgow City could be on course for another record breaking campaign. Despite facing the most difficult first round draw for this season’s Champions League, City go into the group stage as top seeds and hope to emulate the success of 2 years ago, when they reached the last sixteen of Europe’s most elite club competition.

The new City kit is available online on their website at www.glasgowcityladiesfc.co.uk or can be purchased from their club shop on match days.
