Glasgow City remain top of the SWPL after defeating Celtic 3-0
Glasgow City remain top of the SWPL after a convincing 3-0 win over Celtic at Petershill Park in a match supported by ng homes. Ruesha Littlejohn opened the scoring with a left foot strike in the first half, a lead which was doubled by Lisa Robertson before the half time break.
Littlejohn struck again for the reigning Champions on 57 minutes to put City further in front to win three vital points against their rivals and in turn made it six wins out of six so far this season, much to the delight of Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black.
He said, “I am delighted with the result but I am more delighted with the performance as it is as dominant as we have been all season. The girls obviously had taken a bit of stick last week as many people outwith our club had questioned whether we were still the team to beat. I think today we proved that we are a team that still has a lot of football in them, still competitive and still very capable of winning Championships. To limit a big rival in a very important match to no shots on target and three shots in the entire game, is very pleasing and we used our advantages very well today and I think we were far from predictable. ”
City took the lead on 18 minutes as Littlejohn hit a powerful left footed strike into the bottom corner from midway inside the penalty area. Lisa Robertson doubled the home side’s advantage after excellent play from Suzanne Malone pulled off a good save from Celtic keeper Gemma Fay only for Robertson to react first and bury the rebound into the back of the net from 6 yards out.
City added to their advantage in the second half when Littlejohn struck again with 57 minutes on the clock hitting a powerful strike into the bottom corner past the diving Fay. It was a dominant City performance as they continued to push for further goals with Suzanne Malone and Suzanne Lappin going close in particular.
City’s next match is away from home next Sunday to newly promoted Premier side Kilwinning.
