City put twelve past Raith

Glasgow City cemented their place at the top of the Premier League with a resounding 12-1 win over Raith Rovers in Glenrothes.

City’s win now moves the defending Champions three points ahead of Celtic, who have a game in hand, although City have a 38 goal advantage.

With two changes to the City side which lined up against Celtic the week before, City took the game to the home side right from kick off, making the breakthrough as early as four minutes. Full back Emma Fernon played a through ball to Leanne Ross, playing central striker for City instead of her normal midfield berth, and the Scotland international made no mistake, coolly converting past the keeper.

Three minutes later, City were 2-0 up, when midfielder Clare Gemmell diverted her header into the path of Katharina Lindner, who finished well when one on one with the keeper.

Less than a minute later and the away side had a three goal cushion. Emma Fernon crossed from the left and Leanne Ross finished brilliantly with a speculative spectacular header at the near post.

Raith then threatened for the first time in the match when a long ball caught the City defence out, but Laura Williamson in the City goals saved well at the edge of her box from Kristy Scott.

Less than 15 minutes into the game, City went four goals clear. A great through ball from Sue Lappin, timed the run of Lindner and the City striker converted well past the out-rushing keeper.

Raith then pulled a goal back when Lauren Wheatley finished comfortably after City had been slow to react to a throw in.

However, City soon restored their five goal advantage when Lappin made it 6-1, with a trade mark header from a City corner.

City had the ball in the net again when Lindner converted from close range, but despite the Assistant not raising his flag, the referee decided the goal was offside.

Half time 6-1.

Eight minutes into the second period, centre half Rachel Corsie joined the list of goalscorers heading in after a City corner had been cleared by Raith but hooked back into the danger area by Gemmell.

Ten minutes later, Lindner had her hat-trick with one of the goals of the game when the German struck with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Corsie then made it 9-1 converting a great move involving Lindner and Leanne Campbell.

One minute later, Lappin was on the scoresheet again. Lindner charged down a clearance from the Rath keeper and set up Lappin who calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net for her third of the afternoon.

On 72 minutes, City made it 11-1, and Leanne Ross got her hat-trick converting in the box after good wing play from Lindner.

Less than a minute later, Raith were awarded a penalty, much to the amazement of the home side as well as the visitors. Leanne Campbell clearly won the ball and played it to safety, but the referee indicated a foul and awarded Raith a penalty. Justice was done however when Kristy Scott’s penalty was saved by Williamson in the City net.

With nine minutes remaining City completed the rout when Jane Ross made it 12-1 after a great run down the left wing.

City Boss Peter Caulfield said, “The girls performed very well today. It was a solid display and we had a real professional attitude about us. It is a great three points and obviously the number and quality of our goals was excellent.”
