City put 3 past Hibs

Glasgow City stay top of the Premier League following a 3-0 win over Hibernian in Edinburgh today.

City almost got off to a great start, nearly taking an immediate lead, when Lisa Evans broke down the right and crossed to the back post, but Megan Sneddon was unable to keep the high ball down and volleyed over the bar.

Jane Ross then came inches close when she hit the post with Shannon Lynn in the Hibs goals beaten. Ross was unlucky again soon after,  this time the cross bar saving the home side when her strike from eight yards out cannoned off the woodwork and away to safety.

It was third time lucky for Ross when she did eventually put her side in the lead on eighteen minutes. A brilliant passing move involving almost the whole City team found Kat Lindner and the German striker played in Ross who hit a low shot across the face of the keeper and into the back of the net.

City thought they had scored another as Rachel Corsie converted after a Sue Lappin knock down from a City set-piece. However, the referee adjudged Jane Ross to have been in an offside position and interfering with play and the goal was chopped off.

Leanne Ross came close for the visitors, but once more the cross bar saved Hibs as Ross’s shot from distance hit the bar, with City unable to capitalise on the rebound.

With five minutes to half time City eventually got their second goal as Lisa Evans crossed for Jane Ross to finish from close range to give the City striker her second goal of the day.

Half time 0-2

In the second half, City went from strength to strength as they put continued pressure on the Hibs backline. Great possession from the visitors created numerous chances for City, with Shannon Lynn in the Hibs net dealing brilliantly with a number of City efforts on her goal.

Despite dominating proceedings, City were only able to convert one more chance. Jane Ross was bundled over in the box by Frankie Brown and the referee pointed to the spot. As reliable as ever, up stepped Leanne Ross and the City and Scotland midfielder scored from 12 yards, to make it 3-0 to City.

Head Coach Eddie Wolecki was delighted with the win. He said, “Despite a indifferent start, once we got to the pace of the pitch our passing improved and we dominated the game with some great passing moves. We also had to be careful at the back as we know the strength of Hibs in attack, but overall I think we thoroughly deserved the victory.”
