City progress to Quarter Finals
Glasgow City progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Premier League Cup today following a comfortable 5-0 win over Boroughmuir in Edinburgh.
City controlled the match from start to finish but went in at half time a frustrating 0-0, despite carving out eighteen chances in front of goal in the first half.
At the start of the second half, City finally broke the deadlock when Suzanne Malone controlled a pass at the edge of the box and placed her effort in the bottom corner. Soon after Malone added another when she pounced on to a header over the Boroughmuir back four by Clare Gemmell and coolly slotted past the outrushing keeper.
Midway through the second half and Malone got her hat-trick. A cross field pass from Katharina Lindner was met well by Malone who hit a brilliant lob over the keeper to put her side 3-0 ahead.
Next on the scoresheet was Ruesha Littlejohn. Malone again was causing problems breaking through towards the Edinburgh side’s goal. The City striker was challenged by the Boroughmuir keeper and the ball broke kindly to Littlejohn who converted well from a tight angle.
Goal number five came from substitute Sue Lappin who headed home at the back post following a City corner.
City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki was pleased his side were in the next round. He said, “First the foremost we needed to be in the hat for the Quarter Final draw. We are the Cup holders and we don’t plan to give it up easily, so it was vital we got off to a good start. Unfortunately in the first half we struggled to find the net, despite creating enough chances to have finished the game. That was very frustrating and we spoke about it at half time and I am pleased to say the players responded well and we came back out to score five We have a really strong squad this year emphasised by the fact we were able to leave out our international players who had played with Scotland this week. That is a great position to be in and I am sure it will serve us well as the season progresses. ”
