Match preview: Glasgow City v Rangers
One of the most anticipated games of the SWPL season so far takes place on Sunday when top of the table Glasgow City take on second placed Rangers at Petershill Park at 2pm.
City remain the only side still boasting an immaculate 100% record in the 2014 campaign, but Rangers remain only two points behind, following an early season draw with Spartans.
With impressive wins in recent weeks over title challengers Celtic and Hibernian, Rangers are playing with lots of confidence and will feel they have a real chance of inflicting their first ever defeat on reigning Champions City.
Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black admits his side are fully aware of the threat Rangers pose, but says his team are ready for the challenge.
He said, “We have now reached the stage of the season where the next few weeks see us face our biggest challenges of the season. Of course it’s one game at a time at this club and it is fair to say the players, staff and everyone associated at this club are raring to go.
“This weekend brings Rangers as visitors and they have started the season well with only Spartans able to blot their record. Spartans have proved to be difficult opponents as they not only beat Rangers in the League Cup they also took points off them in their League clash. Personally I believe the departure of Manager Angie Hinds took Rangers a few weeks to recover. However since then they have beaten both Celtic and Hibs to remain in second position. We have had them watched several times since the beginning of the season and expect a difficult game. As for a title clash its way too early in the season to win a title but previous years have shown that it can be lost this early. Stability is the key to consistency and consistency wins titles. Of course Rangers have come through one upheaval and they will have to face the same scenario in a few weeks time when a new manager takes over. Michelle Barr has done a great job and managed to settle the team and will leave a competitive side for whoever comes in.
“As for the game itself there will be no surprises, everyone knows how we play, we will look to dominate the ball and go in search of goals. “
