City lose to Birmingham

Glasgow City lost 5-0 today at Toryglen to a well organised and strong Birmingham City side.

One of the teams expected to challenge strongly for the new English Women’s Super League title, Birmingham  did not disappoint and took the lead on eleven minutes when England star Dunia Susi cut in from the left hand side and unleashed an unstoppable 30 yard drive past Claire Johnstone in the City goals.

Susi scored again, side footing home from close range, to put her side 2-0 up at half time. The home side almost got a goal back before the break, when some excellent interchange of passes saw Emma Fernon have an effort on goal inside the box, but with Hourihan in the Birmingham nets beaten, the effort was cleared off the line by the head of a recovering defender.

After the re-start, Rachel Williams scored from a good counter attack and Sally Stanton made it 4-0 with an overhead kick. Dunia Susi then got her hat-trick, to make it a 5-0 win for the visitors.

Commenting on the match, Head Coach Eddie Wolecki said “Pre-season is all about a fitness exercise, bedding in the new players, getting to know our system and working on sharpness. Today’s game filled all of this criteria. We can take a lot of positives from the match in terms of retention of the ball. It has given us a real focus towards improving as a team for the rest of the pre-season.”
