City into semi-finals
Glasgow City progressed to the Semi-Finals of the Premier League Cup with ease today following an 8-0 win over Dundee United at Toryglen.
Cup holders City and Premier League opposition United, made history today, becoming the first domestic match in Scotland to be played indoors.
City went into a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time.
Opening the scoring within ten minutes was City striker Jane Ross when she latched on to a good cut back from Leanne Ross, following a flowing City move down the right.
Goal number two was similar, with excellent play once more down the right flank, but this time Kat Lindner cut the ball back for Ruesha Littlejohn to finish well from close range.
City’s third came from a well worked corner involving Emma Fernon and Leanne Ross, with the ball eventually being fired home by Littlejohn with an overhead kick.
Half time 3 -0.
City began the second half as strongly as they finished the first and it was not long before goal number four was scored. Jane Ross was brought down inside the box by the United keeper, who had been having an excellent game, but this time, the United number 1 was a second too late and received a yellow card for her foul on Ross. Up stepped Littlejohn, to score from the spot and secure her hat-trick.
Next on the scoresheet was substitute Suzanne Malone. Full back Leeanne Campbell made a good run up the right hand side and her cross met the head of other subsitute Sue Lappin. Lappin was challenged well and the ball broke to Malone in the middle of the box and she coolly slotted home under pressure.
City’s sixth came from Lindner. Good play involving Malone set up Lindner who controlled well inside the box and blasted past the keeper.
Leanne Ross was goal scorer for number seven, firing home a tremendous volley across the face of the keeper from a tight angle.
City’s rout was completed by Lindner who volleyed home inside the 6 yard box after a cross from full back Fernon.
City boss, Peter Caulfield was delighted to be in the next round.
He said, “I was delighted not only with the result, but the overall performance today. I felt we have not played as well as we can in recent weeks, but today was much more like Glasgow City. We played the game on the front foot and carried a strong goal threat for the entire ninety minutes. I was also pleased that I managed to once more change the team around a bit today and still get a high level of performance even leaving some experienced players out.”
