City get tough Euro draw

Glasgow City have been tasked with some extremely difficult matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League after the draw was made today at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon.

City who are in Group A, will face Gintra, the Champions of Lithuania, who will host City’s first round group, and Norchi, the Champions of Georgia. However, City’s biggest test will be German Frauen Bundesliga runners-up, Bayern Munich, who lost this season’s League to Potsdam by a goal difference of one solitary goal.

City face the mighty Bayern Munich in their first match and Head Coach Eddie Wolecki is under no illusions how tough the match will be. He said, “Bayern were within a whisker of winning the German League this year and we all know the quality of German club football is the best in the world. Without a doubt, in my opinion, we have the toughest first round match possible, in facing the Germans.

“Last year we lined up against 1. FFC Frankfurt and we saw just how good they were and they finished fourth in the League this season. However, in saying all this, playing against the very best is the whole reason teams want to be in the Champions League and we look forward to all three matches. It is a chance to really test ourselves at the highest level and a tremendous reward for such a successful season at the club.”

City are third seeds in their group of four, with Bayern Munich ranked number one by UEFA. The Germans are followed by Gintra, with the Georgians ranked as fourth seeds.
