City go top of the table

Glasgow City ran out 15-0 winners today against a new look Dundee United side at Dundee Downfield.

With Dundee United struggling badly for players and their management team having left the club, new manager/coach Chris Tawse has just come in and assembled a whole new squad who will need time to gel.

City started out the blocks quickly and took only 2 minutes to get on the score sheet. Leanne Ross beat the full back down the right hand side and a deep cross to the back post was headed brilliantly into the back of the net by Ruesha Littlejohn for her first of the day.

On the 10 minute mark a quick taken free kick by Leanne Ross was turned on to the bar by the United goalkeeper but bounced to safety.

Megan Sneddon was next to go close when she hit a 25 yard strike which was brilliantly saved by the united keeper.

United were only stemming the tide, however, and in the 18th minute Rachel Corsie scored with a deft chip after a slide rule pass from Suzanne Lappin set her up in the box.

On the 20th minute Sue Lappin then got in on the goalscoring act when she headed home powerfully from a corner.  Lappin then scored again when a neat pass from Ruesha Littlejohn allowed her to slot into the corner.

On the 38th minute Littlejohn was cursing her luck when she saw her strike come back off the post only to land at her feet and see her second shot hit the same post.

City completed the first half scoring in the 44th minute when Leanne Ross shot into the top corner of the net from 20 yards.

Half Time 0-5

The second half became one way traffic with City now hemming United in to their own half.

On the hour mark Sue Lappin scored twice in quick succession when she tapped home after the United keeper could only parry a shot and then with a near post header to get City off and running again. This was followed by 2 quick goals from Rachel Corsie, with a near post flicked header and then Ruesha Littlejohn again from inside the box.

United then appeared to be keeping City’s attacks at bay for a time but a rush of goals in the last 15 minutes from Ruesha Littlejohn with 3, Megan Sneddon who finished brilliantly inside the box with a left foot strike, Sue Lappin with a composed finish after a great one-two with Jane Ross and a Leanne Ross penalty after Sue Lappin was pushed in the box.

City manager, Peter Caulfield said after the game, “I was pleased overall with the performance today and of course the result. We started brightly and all though we dropped the tempo of our passing in the first half we put that right after half time and had Dundee United pushed deep. All credit must go to Dundee United though who are better than the score line suggests and I think Chris Tawse will be able to mould then into a good side once he gets enough time to work with them.’

‘The result puts us back on the top of the league now and with only seven games left it is now about concentrating on the job in hand and taking each game at a time.”
