Glasgow City fire 9 past Spartans
Glasgow City defeated Spartans 9-0 today at Petershill Park with a result and performance which undoubtedly pleased Assistant First Team Coach Donald Jennow.
He said, “We are very pleased with the performance today. To defeat last year’s League runners-up by such a margin is testament to the players and what they put into the game. Today was very important. It sets our standard ahead of the Premier League Cup Final when we will play Spartans again in 10 days time. Three points were vital and our performance also shows our statement of intent for the Cup Final, where we know we will need to be at our best once more.”
City got the scoring up and running within the first four minutes of the game as Lisa Evans hit a difficult bouncing ball in the box past Spartans Jo Hutcheson.
Emma Mitchell cut inside to hit a powerful right foot shot just over the bar ten minutes later and having gone agonisingly close on that occasion, the young City striker made sure not to miss her next chance which came less than 60 seconds later when she fired home a pass from Jane Ross into the back of the net.
Chloe Fitzpatrick was the unlucky player to score on own goal to make it 3-0 to City, when she diverted a Jo Love cross past her own keeper inside the box.
Just after the half hour mark, Lisa Evans got her second and City’s fourth goal of the afternoon, when she finished a Mitchell cross at the back post.
Evans and Leanne Ross went close once more and Hutcheson pulled off a brilliant point blank save to deny Mitchell as half time approached.
Half time 4-0.
Less than a minute after the restart Jane Ross hit a great effort off the cross bar as City continued their pressure on the Spartans defence. Next to try their luck was City Captain Rachel Corsie and she curled an exquisite effort into the top corner after only 47 minutes played.
Mitchell had the ball in the back of the net but was ruled offside, before Evans got her hat-trick to make it 6-0 to Glasgow City. Getting on the end of a great pass from strike partner Jane Ross, Evans beat her marker and slotted past Hutcheson for a fine team goal.
On 60 minutes the home side suffered their one low point of the match as Emma Fernon was shown a straight red card for dissent and the City and Scotland full back will now cruelly miss the Cup Final.
Despite having only 10 players, City showed no signs of reducing the pressure on the Spartans rear guard and Jane Ross scored a peach of a goal to make it 7-0 as she fired home from outside the box into the top corner.
Full back Nicky Docherty then got her long awaited first goal for her new club after her pre-season switch to City from Rangers as she hit a sublime left foot drive high into the back of the net.
Leanne Ross scored number 9 as she headed past Hutcheson. Jane Ross thought she had made it 10-0 with 12 minutes remaining as she headed a Leanne Ross cross towards goal, only to be denied by a fingertip save from Hutcheson.
City’s next match will be against Spartans in the Premier League Cup Final on Wednesday 30th May, Recreation Park, Alloa. Kick Off 7.30pm
