Glasgow City finish top at the break
Glasgow City go into the break with their 100% record intact after an impressive 10-0 win over Falkirk at Recreation Park, Alloa.
Doubles from Leanne Ross, Suzanne Lappin, Sarah Crilly along with a debut goal for Emily Thomson and strikes from Lisa Robertson, Eilish McSorley and Jo Love ensured victory for reigning Champions.
Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “I am absolutely delighted for everyone at the club. We had obviously suffered this season with a number of injuries to key players, but the squad has responded brilliantly winning every game, retaining the League Cup and being top of the table, is a marvellous way to sign off at the break.”
City started brightly with Suzanne Malone having a header cleared off the line and a Leanne Ross free kick just shading the bar being two of City’s closest efforts in the opening few minutes.
It took a great save from the Falkirk keeper to push a Sarah Crilly shot on to the post when the City striker was clean through on goal to keep the scores level on 10 minutes.
Emily Thomson went close soon after and great play on 19 minutes almost opened the scoring for City as Cheryl Gallagher did well to win the ball before feeding Jo Love whose cross was headed powerfully by Lappin just wide of the post.
City should have scored on 25 minutes as Sue Lappin brilliantly controlled a Leanne Ross cross, beat her marker, but fired her shot off the post, as City hit the woodwork for the second time.
City opened the scoring just before the half hour mark. Suzanne Malone was shoved to the ground as she controlled a Nicky Docherty cross in the box, leaving the referee no option but to point to the penalty spot. Captain Leanne Ross stepped up and converted the penalty into the bottom corner to give the away side a deserved lead.
Sue Lappin doubled City’s lead soon after as she headed home a Sarah Crilly cross after some fine play from the striker out wide.
Lappin thought she had her second of the day when she headed a Ross corner off the underside of the bar. Did it cross the line? The referee didn’t think so and Falkirk cleared the danger.
Sarah Crilly made it 3-0 after the break with a composed left foot finish past the keeper after a cross from Emily Thomson.
Within 2 minutes, Thomson was provider once more, this time sending in a pin point cross to meet the run of Lisa Robertson who headed into the back of the net to give her side a 4-0 lead.
Emily Thomson made it 5-0 to complete a memorable debut as she finished off a fine City move. Leanne Ross played a great pass out to Nicky Docherty and the full back drove to the line before firing a low powerful cross along the six yard line to meet the run of Thomson who converted in style at the back post.
More fine attacking play from Nicky Docherty produced goal number six for the visitors as her impressive run and cross was met by Lappin who headed past the keeper and in turn give the City midfielder her second of the afternoon.
Sarah Crilly made it 7-0 as she stroked home a Leanne Ross cross to finish off another fine move from the reigning Premier League Champions.
Eilish McSorley made it 8-0 with a stunning volley from a City corner with 6 minutes left on the clock and Jo Love hit a fine strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner to score number 9 for City. With minutes remaining Leanne Ross made it 10-0 finishing at the back post from a Sue Lappin cross
The SWPL resumes on 28th July where the top six teams will play each other twice as will the bottom six, to ensure a competitive exciting second half of the season.
