City end season reaching double milestone
Scottish Champions Glasgow City reached two milestones over the last few weeks, in what was an outstanding season once again for the team, when they were crowned Scottish Premier League Champions for a record breaking fourth consecutive season.
Clare Gemmell was the first to put her name down in Glasgow City history with her goal in the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to eventual winners, Hibernian. It was certainly a disappointing evening for the team as hopes were high that the team could retain the Scottish Cup they won last season, after beating Rangers in the final however, Clare’s goal was the 200th Scottish Cup goal scored by the team since their first campaign in 1999.
Ten days later and Rachel Corsie added her name to the list of notable goal scorers when she put City 1-0 up against Celtic in their 3-1 victory at Celtic’s Lennoxtown Training Academy. Rachel’s strike from close range, after Jane Ross had hit a post, was City’s 1,500th goal in all competitions.
These are both remarkable milestones and testament to the attacking philosophy and quality of City’s play over the years.
Team Manager, Peter Caulfield, commented, “Since I joined the club as manager in 1999 my philosophy has always been to go and win football matches and attack opposition teams at all opportunities. With that in mind I have always looked to bring players to the club who know their way to goal, regardless of what position they play for the team.
“It is a remarkable double milestone to have reached in recent weeks and to see two players score significant goals and add their name to Glasgow City history, when neither are strikers, just emphasises what this club is all about.
“Clare has developed greatly as a midfield player over the last 2 years and has now begun to find the net more regularly recently, which has added a bit more to her game. She is technically of high quality and I can’t think of a better left sided player in the country.
“Rachel is as composed a finisher in the box as you will find for a central defender and always seems to know the correct position to take up to make scoring look easy. She has improved massively this season and is a real leader on the pitch which is magnificent for the team, especially given that she is still young. She is probably put under more pressure than any other player in the squad to produce performances but she has broad shoulders and handles it well. It is a mark of how highly we think of Rachel that we place such great demands on her
“Both players still have room to improve much more which is really exciting and I hope in the next year or two they really mature into top class footballers.”
