City draw with Chelsea

Glasgow City hit stalemate with Chelsea at their training ground in Cobham today, drawing 0-0.

Playing 3 x 30 mins, City coaches Eddie Wolecki Black and Donald Jennow were able to utilise the entire squad, with every player playing a minimum of 60 minutes in the match.

City had by far the better of the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to take the lead in the opening first period.

Captain Sue Lappin went closest for the visitors in the opening 10 minutes when she headed inches wide from a Emma Fernon free kick. Two minutes later, Emma Mitchell shot from the edge of the box but again the effort was wide of the mark as Chelsea struggled to cope with the early City pressure.

Mitchell again had a shot from distance, this time from a free kick after Jane Ross was felled at the edge of the box. Defensive team mate Rachel Corsie was the next player to try and break the deadlock but her effort went agonisingly over the bar. One minute later and Leanne Ross headed just wide from an excellent Mitchell cross.

Just before the first break, Chelsea had their first real effort when Clare Gemmell fouled at the edge of the City box, but her team mates cleared the resultant free-kick. The home side then had another chance when they broke in from the left, but shot wide of Claire Johnstone in the City goal.

Right on the referee’s whistle Emma Mitchell had another good shot, but the Chelsea keeper held on well to deny City from opening the scoring.

Two minutes into the second period and debutant Christie Murray almost opened her account for her new club. Chelsea cleared a City corner only to just inside the edge of their box and Murray hit a superb half volley side on, which flew past the keeper but was acrobatically cleared off the line by a Chelsea defender.

The next chance of the match fell to the home side when a cross came in from the right, but Corsie put enough pressure on the striker and she fired wide of the near post.

Murray again was desperately unlucky not to open her account as Kat Lindner won the ball for the away side, played in Murray, who beat the full back, but her curled left foot shot was expertly saved by the Chelsea number one.

Jo Love was next to test the Chelsea stopper, but her powered drive from distance was well saved again.

Excellent pressure from Leanne Ross saw the City and Scotland midfielder steal the ball from the Chelsea centre half, but her effort to try and chip the keeper, was not high enough and the keeper held on well.

Chelsea were next to attempt to break the deadlock, but shot wide of the City goal after a cross came in from wide.

The final 30 minutes was a more even affair and it took until midway through the last period for a real effort on goal to be recorded. Jane Ross raced on to a through ball and did well to get there before the keeper, but with the goal gaping, she shot wide from 30 yards out. It was a difficult angle for the youngster, who showed excellent bravery and commitment to reach the ball first.

Just before the final whistle, City almost won the match. Lisa Evans had a shot saved and Ruesha Littlejohn was on hand to pick up the rebound. Littlejohn passed to Jane Ross, but as her effort beat the keeper it was once more cleared off the line by a defender.

Commenting on the match, Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “This is probably our first ever goal less draw as a club. We came down for fitness and to push forward and help our new players bed into the side and learn how we play. We created a number of excellent chances today against a very good side and also had to defend. Overall, I am very pleased with how it went.”
