Glasgow City defeat Rangers in the SWPL
Glasgow City defeated Rangers 6 -0 today at Petershill Park.
City opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a Christie Murray special. Just outside the box Murray found room and hit a fantastic left foot strike into the top corner of the net. City’s number 12 rarely scores anything but the spectacular for City and this was another classic.
Murray could have had a hat-trick five minutes later, but went narrowly wide on both occasions.
Lisa Evans went agonisingly close just before the half hour mark, with Murray involved again as she sent Evans free with a defence splitting pass. The City striker then hit a powerful strike towards the roof of the Rangers net, only to be denied by an outstanding save from Khym Ramsey in the Rangers nets.
Jane Ross made it 2-0 with a goal which unbelievably could out do Murray’s earlier effort. Picking up the ball 35 yards out, Ross hit a thunderous strike which went in off the underside of the cross bar.
Two minutes before half time it was 3-0 when Murray released Evans once more with an outstanding pass and Evans finished brilliantly to beat the outrushing Ramsay in the Rangers goal.
Half time 0-3.
In the second half, City continued to dominate possession and carve out chances. Jane Ross and Rachel Corsie went particularly close in the opening ten minutes of the re-start but Ross shot wide and Corsie was denied by another good save from Ramsay.
Jane Ross made it 4-0 to City, when she collected a well placed pass from Leanne Ross before shooting past Ramsay for a good finish into the bottom corner. She was then denied her hat-trick 68 minutes when she hit the post.
Kat Lindner fired home to make it 5-0 with 74 minutes played with another impressive City goal as she curled the ball into the far corner of the net leaving the Rangers keeper with no chance.
Jane Ross did eventually get her hat trick when she bulleted home a header from an Emma Woolley cross, making it a 6-0 win for City over their Glasgow rivals.
Commenting on the match, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “I think it is fair to say that we were not at our best today, but we are delighted to pick up another three points in the League. I also have to give a special mention to Jane Ross who I thought was excellent. Rangers made it a physical game for us and we had to work hard to create chances. Overall it was pleasing to get six goals, a clean sheet and three points.”
