City defeat Rangers

Glasgow City maintained their 100% record with a 5-1 win over Rangers at Petershill.

It was the home side however who took the lead in the opening ten minutes. A long clearance up front was controlled by Rangers striker Claire Rae who hit a forty yard looping effort on goal which went straight into the back of the net.

It was not the start City were looking for, but despite constant pressure and corner after corner, it took City twenty minutes before they equalised. A pass up the line by full back Emma Fernon, met the run of striker Suzanne Malone, who lobbed the keeper to put City back on level terms.

Half time 1-1.

At the start of the second half, City went ahead after Malone was felled in the box and City were awarded a penalty. Up stepped midfielder Leanne Ross and coolly slotted home from the spot.

The away side then made it 3-1, this time scoring through striker Katharina Lindner.  Sue Lappin played the German striker in, and she took a touch and placed it in the bottom corner.

Lindner then added another, getting on the end of a cross from Ruesha Littlejohn in the 6 yard box and right on the final whistle, City made it 5-1, when full back Fernon hit a 30 yard effort, which the keeper failed to keep out.

City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki, felt his side could have done better.

He said, “It was frustrating that once more we gave a team something to fight for by allowing them the first goal. It then put anxiety in our game and we stopped doing the things that we are good at. Once we levelled, I was more than confident we would relax and take the game to them, which is what we did. Overall we dominated for ninety minutes and they never worked our keeper, other than the goal, but we must start better in games. We are however creating a lot of chances in games and very shortly we are going to take our fair share of them and someone will be on the end of a heavy defeat.”
