City defeat Norchi

Glasgow City defeated Georgian champions Norchi an impressive 9-0 in their final match of the UEFA Women’s Champions League first round.

City's win, means the Scottish treble winners won two out of their three European matches, but unfortunately it was not enough to progress, as German giants Bayern Munich won the Group with a maximum nine points with three wins.

City started their final match very strongly and went in 7-0 at half time. In the second half, with the game won, City took their foot off the pedal but still managed a further two goals with no reply against the Georgians.

Goalscorers for City were Suzanne Malone (4), Katharina Lindner (1), Ruesha Littlejohn (1), Megan Sneddon (1), Leanne Ross (1), Sue Lappin (1).

City boss Peter Caulfield reflected on his side's European campaign.

He said, "With the new format of the top nations having a second team in the qualifying rounds, it will always make it difficult for the so called smaller nations to progress. We also managed to get an unlucky draw in that we lined up against top seeds Bayern Munich, but in saying that we more than competed. Infact, if I am honest, in the second half of that match we seriously troubled them. The whole campaign for us rested on the Bayern game and we gave them too much respect in the first half. That gave us a huge task in the second period, but credit to the girls, they achieved it against one of Europe's best sides. Unfortunately we cost ourselves dearly by switching off after we equalised and at this level, every mistake is punished. In the other two matches we were strong and at times played very well. The Champions League is a phenomenal experience for everyone involved with the club and our focus is now back home and the start of the Premier League on Sunday to ensure we are in this competition again next year."
