Glasgow City defeat Liverpool
Scottish Champions Glasgow City defeated top English side Liverpool 3-0 today at Petershill Park.
Liverpool had the best of the opening exchanges, but after ten minutes City took control. City were causing their visitors countless problems down the left hand side where Lisa Evans, Kat Lindner and Jane Ross in particular were causing havoc.
A great run down the left hand side by Lindner, saw the German cross to back post to Lisa Evans, but the City and Scotland Under 19 striker fired her shot just wide.
Ten minutes later, full Back Emma Fernon then played a fantastic through ball to Evans but after cutting inside from the left hand side her shot was saved by keeper.
The Liverpool keeper then produced the save of the game to keep her side in the match, when an Evans cross was inch perfect finding the run of Jane Ross but her header into bottom corner, was touched round the post for a corner by the Liverpool number one.
Evans then had another great run down left but she fired over the bar when perhaps she should have done better.
Five minutes before half time, Evans more than made amends for her earlier miss when she had another outstanding run down the left driving past the full back, rounded the goal keeper and fired home.
City made it 2-0 just before half time when Jane Ross showed great strength to hold off a number of challenges before placing the ball under the keeper to give her side a comfortable advantage.
Half time 2-0.
Not long after the restart and City went 3-0 ahead. Jane Ross hit a great cross to the edge of the six yard box and substitute Ruesha Littlejohn headed home.
With the game now over, City were in cruise control and created a number of further chances and should have added to their lead.
Head Coach Eddie Wolecki commented on the match. He said, “It was a nice finish to the season for us to win quite comfortably in the end. I thought the girls played very well and more than deserved the win. We created a number of chances and perhaps should have added some more. Overall, I thought the team was solid throughout. Liverpool are obviously one of the teams in the new English professional Super League, so it was a great benchmark for us today and I think we proved just how good a team we are with the result and our performance.”
