Glasgow City defeat Hibs to secure 7th title in a row

Glasgow City secured an incredible 7th title in a row after defeating Hibernian 4-0 at Albyn Park, Broxburn.

City needed only one point from their remaining four games to clinch the Championship and won it in style against second placed Hibs thanks to a hat-trick from Leanne Ross and a strike from Jo Love.

City striker Christie Murray made her competitive return to the side after a year out and despite only managing 45 minutes, caused the home side problems, winning two first half penalties as she was brought down on route to goal. Ross converted in opposite corners on each occasion before getting her third of the match just after the break when she curled a free kick from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Midfielder Jo Love ensured the emphatic victory midway through the second half as she converted from close range after being set up by Jess Fishlock.

Commenting on the historic win, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “A massive congratulations to all players and staff involved with the club. It is a great achievement to win the title for 7th time in a row. In a way I am glad we didn’t tie it up last week as today we showed how champions should play as we had to come to our nearest rivals to win the title. As much as Hibs made a game of it, I thought we were really dominant and in total control of the game. Like anything else when you are successful you don’t have a chance to celebrate as we now move on to the Scottish Cup semi-final next Sunday against Celtic.”

Glasgow City will be presented with the SWPL Championship at their next home match at Petershill Park, G21 4DD on 13th October, 2pm v Celtic.
