Cup exit ensures League focus
Glasgow City today went down 4-2 to Celtic in the Second Round of the Scottish Cup.
The two top Premier League sides had met twice already this season, with City victors on both occasions, but it was not to be today, as the Hoops fought well for their victory.
Celtic went in ahead 2-1 at half time, having looked the hungrier team in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Celtic moved 3-1 ahead before a glorious 35 yard strike from City midfielder Megan Sneddon, got City back in the game to make it 3-2. City then pressed hard for the equaliser and almost took the game to extra time when Suzanne Lappin rose brilliantly from a City corner, only to see her header crash of the Celtic bar. With less than a minute remaining City’s push up front caught them short at the back as Celtic countered and scored to finally take the game beyond Glasgow City.
City boss Peter Caulfield was disappointed with the result but remained focussed for the rest of the season. He said, “We never got going today and for that I am very disappointed as Celtic looked a lot more up for the game than we did. However, you can have a day when players are not at their best, just unfortunately for us it was the entire team. But we know we are much better than this and currently sit top of the Premier League. The League title is our big aim this season, with the prize of Europe, enough motivation for everybody. Our next game funnily enough is against Celtic in the League in a fortnight and I am more than confident we will be a much different team in two weeks time.”
