City top table on day one
Glasgow City got the new season off to the best possible start with an impressive 6-0 away win to Aberdeen today (Sunday).
Striker Jane Ross started the goal rush after she expertly collected an excellent diagonal pass from Jayne Sommerville, just inside the box, before coolly slotting past the Dons keeper into the bottom corner.
Next on the score sheet was Megan Sneddon, who gathered the ball 22 yards out and hit a well placed shot into the back of the net. It was a driven and controlled strike from the Scottish internationalist who is looking impressive even at this early stage of the season.
Not to be outdone by her team mate, Leanne Ross was next to try her luck from outside the box as she finished off another good City move with an unstoppable shot which flew into the Aberdeen net.
Under 19 internationalist Ruesha Littlejohn made it 4-0 with a close range finish before Katharina Lindner hit number five after cutting inside her player and unleashing a great strike into the bottom corner of the net from just inside the penalty box..
5-0 at half time.
The second half once again saw City dominate, but with a little less fluency than they had in the first half. Katharina Lindner scored her second goal of the game to make it 6-0, but could have had a hat trick after hitting over the bar from 6 yards out as she stretched to reach a cross ball from substitute Emma Fernon. Lindner also hit the post and Ruesha Littlejohn squandered a good chance inside the penalty area after taking a little too long to put her shot away.
6-0 was a great opening day result for City and with a number of top players injured, including full back Kirsty McNicol and new signings Leanne Crichton and Suzanne Malone, City have a lot of quality still to come into the team, much to the delight of Manager Peter Caulfield.
He said, “We were without a number of important individuals today who add an incredible depth of quality to our squad. I am delighted with the result, but most importantly with the way the team played, particularly in the first half. I had a glimpse of our real ability a few weeks ago in Manchester and today I saw that in the League game. However, this is only day one and we have a long, long way to go. Hopefully we will get the injured players back sooner rather than later to really increase competition for places. Then we will see how good we really can play.
