City hit seven past Clyde
Glasgow City today ensured that they maintained their top of the table slot with a very comfortable if somewhat frustrating 7-0 win over Vale of Clyde.
On a tight park with Clyde ensuring they had their entire team behind the ball, combined with some poor finishing, City found it difficult to make the breakthrough in the first half. Despite dominating full possession, it took the visitors over half an hour to take the lead, when Leeanne Campbell converted from the penalty spot following a foul on Emma Fernon inside the box.
After the relief of finally taking the lead, City went in 3-0 up at half time courtesy of a low drive from a free kick by Suzanne Lappin and a strike from forward Ruesha Littlejohn.
In the second half City continued to create chance after chance, but only managed to convert a small percentage of opportunities. The best of the remaining four goals came from midfielder Fernon who hit a cracking left foot volley into the bottom corner from outside of the Clyde box. Fernon added another to her tally as did Littlejohn and a solitary strike from Katharina Lindner ensured the 7-0 victory.
The result and three points were pleasing for City but Manager Peter Caulfield was left wondering what might have been if his side had been a little more diligent in front of goal. He said, “We hit the woodwork five times in this game and I lost count of the number of chances squandered. I felt they got a little bit of luck in the first half when their keeper deliberately handled the ball outside the box, preventing Ruesha Littlejohn having a strike at goal when she was clean through with only the keeper to beat. Most referees would have sent the keeper off, but I think lady luck was shining on Clyde a little today. However, despite that, we created enough chances to make this our biggest win of the season and for me that is disappointing. We have a tough game next Sunday against Kilmarnock and will need to be a little sharper in the latter half of the field if we want to guarantee three points.”
