City back on track

Glasgow City firmly put their cup disappointment from last week behind them today (Sunday) as they easily defeated a well organised Forfar side 4-1 at Glasgow Green.

City were in total control throughout the whole match and played very well from back to front in a good passing display.

Despite dominating possession for the entire first half the home side only went in 1-0 up at half time thanks to a goal from Donna Shaw. This was Shaw’s first strike for Glasgow City since moving from Newburgh in the close season and the central defender definitely enjoyed it. A free-kick from Leanne Ross was cleverly slipped through the Forfar defence to Katharina Lindner, who cut the ball back for Shaw to score from a couple of yards.

In the second half, City extended their lead after more good set play from Leanne Ross. This time Ross took an early corner and hit it low and hard to the front post for Emma Fernon to slip the ball past the helpless Forfar keeper from a tight angle.

Fernon was on the score sheet again, to make it 3-0 to the home side after Angie Livingston in the City goal set Lindner free down the right with an early kick out. Lindner took on two Forfar defenders before cutting the ball back from the touchline for Fernon to hit a well placed shot into the back of the net.

Forfar hit back through a City mistake to make it 4-1, but Ruesha Littlejohn soon restored City’s three goal advantage with a close range header after another City corner, making it 4-1 for the home side.

City boss Peter Caulfield was delighted with his side’s display. He said, “This was a magnificent performance today. We passed the ball really well and were so unlucky not to score more with the amount of possession and chances that we created. However, Forfar are a well organised side and never gave up. It was great to have such a positive display after losing in the Cup midweek and think we showed today, exactly the type of football we can play. Unfortunately we now have a week off due to international qualifiers, but we look forward to visiting Hibs in the league in a fortnight.”
