Caulfield looks ahead to Cup
It is only week number two of the season, but already Glasgow City Manager Peter Caulfield is taking his mind off the League campaign as his side face up to Raith Rovers in the first round of the Thompson’s Premier League Cup on Sunday.
“We don’t normally start the Cup this early, but our new administrators at the SFA have decided to get things under way, and I personally think it is a great idea,” explained the City boss.
“The more important games we get played when the weather is nice and the pitches are in good condition the better as far as I am concerned. As a passing side, a good surface always helps us and Raith will be a difficult tie. Undoubtedly we are looking to win the Cup this year, so it is imperative we get past the first hurdle on Sunday”, continued Caulfield.
City have certainly started the season well. An impressive 6-0 away win to Aberdeen last weekend makes them clear League leaders and as Caulfield explained, confidence is high.
He said, “We had an excellent pre-season, winning the Umbro Cup in Manchester, and took that form into our League win against Aberdeen. We are still without four big players who are struggling with injury right now, so given they have still to come in and boost competition, I am very happy with how things are going even at this early stage.”
Elsewhere League Cup holders Edinburgh, face last year’s beaten finalists Hibernian in what will be an interesting re-match. Hibs have just returned from their European Women’s Cup adventure and may have the advantage of sharpness over their Edinburgh rivals.
Forfar take on the new Celtic side and Aberdeen face Kilmarnock. With the Premier League consisting of twelve teams, Newburgh, Queens Park, Vale of Clyde and Hamilton all received byes from the first round draw.
