City stay top of table

Glasgow City maintained their lead at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League today (Sunday) with a 4-1 win over third placed Edinburgh in the Capital.

City started the match strongly and took the lead in the first five minutes through a powerful strike from outside the box by midfielder Megan Sneddon. The away side dominated possession in the first half and went close on a number of occasions to adding to their lead. Sneddon hit another long range drive, which unfortunately came back off the post, and fellow midfielder Leanne Ross hit a great shot which cannoned off the corner of the cross bar and away to safety. Ross’s effort, if it had gone in, would have been a candidate for goal of the season but unfortunately for the Scottish internationalist it was not to be. The City midfielder’s luck worsened as she had to be replaced a few minutes later with an ankle injury.

In the second half, City continued to dominate the game but were unable to convert any chances into a two goal lead. Edinburgh, through striker Diana Barry in particular, always looked a danger and the young Edinburgh player put her side back in the game when she fired home from close range after Angie Livingston in the City net, was unable to hold an Edinburgh free-kick.

Barry’s strike was enough to lift a flat City and the away team pushed hard to win the game. Within a few minutes they were back in the lead, this time through a header from Suzanne Lappin. City hit number three when good combination play between Katharina Linder and Emma Fernon set up Ruesha Littlejohn to calmly slot past the Edinburgh keeper.

The away side were then home and dry when Lindner scored City’s fourth goal after being set up by a clever header from Lappin.

City now go into their winter break top of the table and look forward to working hard on further improvement of their game over the winter shut down.
