City knocked out of Cup

Glasgow City were knocked out of the League Cup tonight after losing their semi-final 5-3 against Hibernian.

City took the lead in the first half through striker Jane Ross, but Hibs hit back twice through Kim Little to put the capital side ahead. City equalised after Katharina Lindner was brought down in the box by Hibernian’s Shelley Kerr and Captain Laura Montgomery stepped up to score the resultant penalty.

Minutes before half time, City switched off and gave the ball away in the middle of the park, allowing a quick break to Little who squared for strike partner Suzanne Grant to put Hibs in front.

Soon into the second half, Hibernian extended their lead after a poor decision from the referee awarded Hibs a corner kick. City were furious and when the resultant corner was headed into the back of the net by Shelley Kerr, it became very clear that this was not to be their night.

City scored a third through a terrific strike from Katharina Lindner, only for the referee to cancel the goal for offside. This was yet another turning point in the game, decided once again unfortunately by the officials.

City pressed hard to get back into the game, but naiveté cost them dearly when Hibs took a quick free kick which was well saved by Laura Williamson in goal, only for Stacey Cook to react first to put the ball into the back of the City net.

In the last 20 minutes, Suzanne Malone came on for the injured Ruesha Littlejohn and this seemed to give the City the impetus they were needing. Malone came close on a number of occasions as she desperately tried to pull a goal back.

City did indeed reduce the deficit to 5-3 following a good run and strike from Emma Fernon. However, it was all too little too late and Hibernian progress into the final to face Queens Park, who defeated Aberdeen 3-2 in the other semi final tonight.
