City defeat top seeds ZFK Masinac

Glasgow City today defeated top Group seeds ZFK Masinac, from Serbia, a resounding 4-0 in their second group game of their European First Round Qualification campaign.

Playing once more in blistering heat, 100 degrees, City started the game with confidence and took the lead on ten minutes through striker Katharina Lindner. Cutting in from the left hand side, Lindner eased past the Masinac defence before releasing a powerful shot into the back of the Serbian net.

Next on the scoresheet was Jane Brown, with Lindner this time proving to be the provider. Brilliant wing play again from Lindner saw her beat the full-back and cut the ball back from the touchline for Brown to strike home.

The crowd of 500 was silenced again, when Brown got her second of the day after an almost identical build up to her last goal. This time Lindner was found brilliantly by Megan Sneddon before she took on the defence and cut the ball back for Brown to score from close range.

Half time 3-0.

Within 60 seconds of the re-start City had goal number four, this time through striker Ruesha Littlejohn. After good play between Sneddon and Lindner, Littlejohn was played in and the Scotland Under 19 forward took on her marker before hitting a great strike into the back of the net, to make it a comfortable win for City.

City Boss Peter Caulfield, could not hide his delight. He said, “We now have a real real chance of making history and becoming the first Scottish side to reach the second stage. I told the girls to make sure they were still in the game at half time and they came in 3-0 up! Masinac have been in Europe many times, with this being their 29th European game, so they are vastly experienced compared to this being only our 5th ever match at this level. Like the Dutch, they are a professional side and to defeat the top seeds in the manner we did today was simply outstanding. Without a doubt, this was the biggest match of this clubs history today and we took the game by the scruff of the neck and did ourselves very proud. The Dutch team defeated the Moldovan side 7-0 today and Masinac defeated them 14-1, so going into our last game against the Moldovan’s we have a very good chance to do the unthinkable. However, before we start thinking of goal difference and all of the permutations of the other match, we need to win our game, which is all we will be focussing on.”
