City girls top of the table

Glasgow City Girls ensured they remained firmly on top of the Second Division table with a 2-1 victory over Louden today.

With the team ravaged by injury, City had to dig deep for the entire match, but produced a fantastic performance to ensure a 100% start to the season.

City took the lead in the first half after Lisa Evans drove down the left hand side before sending a powerful drive which came back off the post, with Ashleigh Morgan reacting first to send the ball into the back of the Louden net. Louden equalised towards the end of the first period after City had failed to deal with a short corner, making it 1-1 at half time.

It was a disappointing goal to lose just before half time, but City regrouped and fought hard in the second half, creating a number of chances and eventually got their rewards when Lauren McMurchie scored the winner with 20 minutes remaining.  With her usual calm head, Scotland Under 17 internationalist McMurchie, beat two defenders before slotting the ball past the Louden keeper for a well deserved victory for our girls.

Coach Derek Murray was delighted with the three points. He said, “A special mention goes to all of the girls who played through the pain barrier today as we were carrying a lot of knocks going into this match. Today was a tough game for us, but I am delighted to say we came out on top with all three points and sit proudly at the top of the League.”
