City Girls win again

Glasgow City Girls continued their 100% start to the season defeating Glasgow University 10-0, their 13th straight win in all competitions.

With strong winds and a heavy pitch, City Girls made the most of difficult conditions and went in 5-0 up at the break.

City took the lead through new signing Caron Campbell in her first start for City and she went on to get another before being replaced at half-time. Midfielder Lauren McMurchie also knocked up a brace in the first 45 minutes, with striker Emma McMonagle getting on the scoresheet as well.

At half time, City brought on striker Mel Stirling and the former City first team player immediately showed her quality and looked sharp and impressive wide on the left. Stirling’s fine play saw her rewarded with a hat-trick, with fellow substitute Sarah Major also netting for the home side.

City’s 10 goal demolition of Glasgow Uni was completed by Scotland youth internationalist Lauren McMurchie, who made sure it was not only Stirling who finished on a hat-trick.

With an extremely tough Scottish Cup tie against Premier League side Boroughmuir next Sunday, Girls boss Richie Evans was more than pleased with his team’s efforts.

He said, “The wind made it very difficult today and for large parts of the match the ball seemed to be out of play. However for about a dozen passages of play we were brilliant and showed just what we are capable of. We had a full squad today which was also fantastic and that allowed us to make some excellent substitutions during the game. I was able to start Caron Campbell and Mel’s contribution when she came on in the second half was immense. We also gave a debut to Marni Russell and she will be a fine player for us. Shawnie McGeechan is also settling in well to the team and overall things are looking quite good for us just now.”
