Glasgow City Girl's make it to League Cup Final

Glasgow City Girls defeated Falkirk in a thrilling match last night at Forthbank stadium to progress to the SWFL Cup Final, where they will face Celtic.

City’s youth team, edged out First Division side Falkirk on penalties after the match was tied 3-3 after extra-time.

Despite the intense cold, this was a terrific match with both teams going all out to win it in normal time. Falkirk took the lead in the first half, but this was cancelled out by half time City substitute Ashley Morgan within minutes of the re-start.

Falkirk then regained their lead only a few moments later following a moment of rare complacency by the City defence. However, an excellent goal from City and Scotland Under 17 forward Lisa Evans put the Girl’s level once more. City really took hold of the match in the second half, but despite a number of close efforts to win the game, Falkirk held out.

Full time 2-2.

City started the first period of extra time where they left off and it was no surprise when they took the lead once more. Another excellent goal from Lisa Evans looked good enough to give City the win, but with only two minutes left of extra-time a blunder by Diane Bruce in the City net, allowed Falkirk the equaliser.

It was a harsh blow for Bruce who was called in at the very last minute after City’s first and second choice keepers were ruled out. However, she was soon to more than redeem herself as the penalties went to sudden death and it was her save that put her side through to their first ever Cup Final.

Manager Richie Evans was over the moon. He said, “What a game this was. When Lisa scored in extra-time I was sure that was it. But unfortunately we let them off the hook. However full credit to Diane. She has done us a huge favour by turning out tonight and in the end won this match for us. I cannot believe that this is our first ever season as a team and the first ever time these girls have played senior football and we are in the Cup Final. Our Cup Final opponents, Celtic B are another side in the First Division, a full league above us, but we have defeated a few First Division side’s to make this Final, so we will be going into the match full of confidence. It is only October and our two teams – Glasgow City First Team and Glasgow City Girls are both in their respective League Cup Finals – a brilliant accolade for this club and it shows the quality of players that we have.”
