City Girls maintain winning streak
Glasgow City Girls maintained their 100% League record with their 15th straight win, overcoming Linwood Rangers 4-0 away from home on Sunday.
City started quickly and took the perfect lead on three minutes. Caron Campbell was involved in a move up the left wing and crossed for Lyndsey Anderson, who fired into the bottom left hand corner. It was a great opening for the young City side and an even better one for Anderson, who was making her starting debut for City, having signed only last week.
The visitors continued to press, but it took until the 33rd minute for City to double their advantage. Once more the play began on City’s left, with full back Atlanta Gray playing in Caron Campbell who fired a difficult cross into the Linwood box. Linwood managed to clear their lines, but only to the feet of City’s Ciara Barnes who slotted home to make it 2-0 to City. Like Anderson, Barnes signed only very recently and will be pleased with her goal in only her second ever match for City.
A couple of minutes later, City put the game beyond their hosts, when Mel Stirling bagged her 13th League goal of the season. A long kick out from Lee Alexander in the City goals was headed on by Stirling and the striker chased her own flick on, eventually converting past the Linwood keeper.
Half time 3-0.
In the second period, City remained the dominant side, but were unable to add to their lead until 17 minutes to go. A corner from Stirling was met brilliantly by centre half Eilish McSorley who powered her unstoppable header into the back of the net.
Manager Richie Evans was once more delighted with his side. He said, “The Girls did really well again today. The defence was solid and we have another clean sheet. Iona Colville was asked to play in an unfamiliar midfield role and she did herself and the team proud today - as indeed did all of the players. Much is documented about the players we have out through injury and suspension just now, and today we were a much changed team from the one which faced Linwood earlier on in the season. However back then we had arguably our strongest eleven and won 4-0. Today, we again won 4-0 which is testament to the quality within this whole squad and once again evidence of how important every single player is to Glasgow City.”
