City Girls back with a bang
Glasgow City Girls continued their form of excellent results today with their first game back after the winter break, defeating Linwood Rangers 4-0 at Glasgow Green.
Today’s win moves City’s second string four points behind leaders Troon, but with two games in hand.
City took the lead in the first half courtesy of centre half Eilish McSorley who reacted quickest to an opportunity in the box after Linwood had failed to clear a City corner.
Half time 1-0.
In the second half, City added their second and best goal of
the day, when centre forward Emma McMonagle picked the ball
up just inside the opposition half, advanced ten yards and then unleashed a
screaming shot into the back of the Linwood net. It was McMonagle’s best goal in a
City strip and one which capped off a fine all round performance on the day.
City secured all three points, when McSorley got her second of the day, again from a City set piece. A well worked short corner between Lisa Evans and Lauren McMurchie sent a good ball to the back post which was won by Emma Mitchell. The Linwood keeper could only push Mitchell’s effort back up into the air and Mitchell won it again, sending it to the far post for McSorley to nod in for her ninth goal of the season.
Not to be outdone by her teammates, City’s top goalscorer Lisa Evans made sure she was on the scoresheet, scoring City’s fourth. Midfielder Laura Murray won the ball back for City, allowing McMurchie to release Evans. With pace unmatched by very few, Evans than ran the entire length of the Linwood half, before slotting a fine finish past the Linwood keeper.
City Boss, Richie Evans was pleased with the points.
He said, "This was always going to be a tough game today. Linwood are a good side, going well in the League and they have some experienced players, something our young squad lacks. For this being the first game back after such a long break I thought we were a little rusty. We controlled the first half, without ever really playing as good as we can. The second half was more open and perhaps that allowed us to create more opportunities. We wanted three points and we got them which is the most important thing. We were also able to give debuts to our two new signings - Shawnie McGeechan and Caron Campbell and both have a very promising future with this team. We now have a tough Scottish Cup match next Sunday, so it was good to get a hard game under our belt and we look forward to next Sunday".
