City Girls move into pole position
Glasgow City Girls secured a 3-0 win over Maryhill to move top of the table.
Like the First team at Celtic, City Girls were facing a crucial first versus second clash and emulated the achievements of the top team, by securing the win and the top of the table slot.
Girls Captain Emma Mitchell put her side in the lead with an outstanding goal. Striker Mel Stirling played a diagonal ball to Mitchell who hit a first time volley into the opposite corner of the net from the edge of the box.
The game then hit a sour note when Mitchell got involved in a scuffle and was sent off on 33 minutes with her Maryhill counterpart.
Half time 1-0.
In the second half, City extended their lead. Caron Campbell made her way down the wing and from the touchline sent in a good cross which Shawnie McGeechan side footed into the back of the Maryhill net.
Mel Stirling scored City’s third and like the first from Mitchell was a brilliant strike. Stirling received the ball from the left and drilled a fantastic 25 yard drive into the bottom corner, to put the game beyond the visitors.
Girls Manager Richie Evans was delighted. He said, “We were down three strong players today, but the Girls totally rose to the occasion. Despite the importance of the game, the Girls showed fantastic composure and once again the defence was excellent. Lee Alexander was first class in goals, commanding, brave and she kicked really well. I am so proud of every single player in this squad and I hope we can go on from strength to strength.”
