City storm into Premier League Cup Final
Glasgow City today defeated Celtic 3-1 at Petershill to reach the final of the Premier League Cup and head off to Europe on the perfect high.
With both City and Celtic undefeated this season, something had to give and it was City who kept their excellent 100% record intact with a resounding 3-1 win over their Glasgow rivals.
City took the lead in the first half when a quick free kick from full back Leeanne Campbell was played to Leanne Ross. The midfielder then fired in a powerful ball which came off the cross bar, with City striker Ruesha Littlejohn the first to react to send the ball into the back of the net.
Ten minutes later City doubled their lead, when another good ball from Leanne Ross released striker Jane Ross down the right and the City forward evaded the full back before driving in on goal and sending the perfect shot into the far corner of the net from a tight angle.
Half time 2-0.
In the second half, Celtic went for broke bringing on another two strikers, but it was still City who looked the more likely to score and they did get number three, with Jane Ross getting her second of the day to make it 3-0. City should have added a fourth, when striker Katharina Lindner coolly beat her marker yards from goal, but blasted the ball straight at Celtic’s Claire Johnstone in goal.
With less than five minutes remaining, Celtic got a consolation, when Jenny Beattie turned well and hit an excellent 25 yard shot into the top corner of the City net.
For City boss, Peter Caulfield, Celtic’s goal was the only blight to an excellent display from his team. He said, “I thought we controlled the entire match. We were disciplined and worked hard and Celtic struggled to create anything. When we took the lead I knew it would be very difficult for Celtic to get back into the match and we continued to look very threatening every time we went forward. The only downside was to lose a goal so late on. Angie Livingstone in our goal got a hand to it, but could only help it into the net. However, it was a good turn and decent strike from Beattie, but I am really pleased with our overall performance. We can now head off to Oslo on Tuesday knowing we are in our first final of the season and that is a very good feeling.”
