City sign off in style

Glasgow City finished their double winning season last night with maximum league points after defeating Boroughmuir 9-0 at Saughton Enclosure.

Last night’s win was City’s 33rd straight win in domestic football, a phenomenal run which has seen them lift two League championships, two League Cups and the Scottish Cup in the past 12 months alone. Their 9 goals without reply against Boroughmuir also ensured an incredible 104 goals scored this season in all competitions, including 71 goals in eleven league games, nearly 6.5 goals per league match.

In a line up consisting of four changes from the side which started against Hibernian last Sunday, City found their rhythm early and the goals started to flow. On target for City were Sue Lappin (3), Leanne Ross (2), Jane Ross (1), Lisa Evans (1), Suzanne Malone (1) and Rachel Corsie (1).

Lappin set City off on the goal spree soon after kick off. Striker Evans played in full back Leeanne Campbell and her cross to the edge of the six yard box, found the run of Lappin who finished with ease. The midfielder soon got her second of the match, this time reacting to a good pass from Jane Ross who had broke down the right, before crossing for her teammate to score.

Ross herself then finished off number three, heading in from an Emma Fernon cross. Fernon again was provider as she set up Rachel Corsie who side footed home at the near post.

City then ensured a comfortable 5-0 lead at half time, when striker Suzanne Malone made a powerful run into the penalty area, only to be brought down  by the home defence. Up stepped Scotland and City midfielder Leanne Ross who, for not the first time this season, made no mistake from the spot.

Half time 5-0.

In the second half, City were back on track again when Malone herself hit a good shot across the face of the keeper after being set up by Rachel Corsie with a back post cross.

Lappin netted her hat-trick arriving late in the box once more to connect on to a cut back from Leanne Ross.

Lisa Evans, in her second start of the season, made a case for the City management team when she finished well after being set-up by fellow striker Malone.

Goal number nine fell to Leanne Ross who fired low past the keeper after good link up between Campbell and Malone, saw Malone cut it back to Ross just inside the penalty area.

Another win, another league title and an unsurprisingly happy City Boss.

Peter Caulfield said, “It was another good display by the team tonight. It was not easy coming all the way through to Edinburgh on a freezing cold night, after a hard day at work, with the league already won, but credit to the team, they did it again. 33 straight wins is nothing to be dismissed. It shows the strength of this team. Our goals come from all over the pitch and for a Manager, I couldn’t be happier with this. This short season we have six players, each having scored more than ten goals each, which I think highlights the contribution of every single player to our success. Right from the back to the front we are a solid team and I feel this is only the beginning for us. We have one more session left and then we will let the girls have a well earned break, before they come back raring to go again for pre-season.”
