City on form against United
Glasgow City solidified their place in third spot with a 7-1 win over Dundee United at Glasgow Green.
With the visitors wearing City’s famous orange, the hosts reverted to their away Argentina style strip, ensuring a few spectators took a minute or two to work out which side was which.
City started strongly and put pressure on United right from the first whistle and it wasn’t long before striker Ruesha Littlejohn had put the home side in front.
Sue Lappin then made it number two, after Kat Lindner had made her way down the right wing before crossing for Littlejohn who set-up Lappin at the back post.
Littlejohn then got her second of the day after more excellent play from Lindner on the right saw the German cut the ball back from the touchline to Littlejohn who flashed her shot across the keeper and into the bottom hand corner, for a well taken goal.
Half time 3-0
Not long after kick off Lappin had her name on the scoresheet again.
Next up was Kat Lindner who managed a couple of goals of her own. For her first, Lindner drove down the right before cutting in and firing across the keeper. The striker then showed fantastic composure to lift the ball over the outrushing United goalie after she was sent clear by an excellent through ball from Lappin.
Lappin then capped off a fantastic performance with a hat-trick, which also marked her 100th goal for Glasgow City in her six years with the club – not a bad statistic for a midfielder. Lindner was involved again, playing the ball inside to Scottish internationalist Megan Sneddon who set up Lappin at the back post to convert from close range.
With the last kick off the ball the shine was taken off City’s fine performance when a free-kick from United went in off the under-side of the bar.
Final score 7-1.
City boss Peter Caulfield was delighted with his side’s performance.
He said, “I felt we started really strongly and had them on the back foot right from the first whistle. We then maintained this pressure for the full match, with the only upset being the freekick, which was very disappointing, especially when it was the last kick of the ball. United are a side I have been impressed with this year. They have some talented players and are a good organised team, who will go far in this League in the years to come. They are a difficult side to beat so to put seven past them today is testament, I believe, to how well we played.”
