City keep the wins coming
City continued their run of consecutive wins in 2009 by defeating Boroughmuir Thistle 6-0 in Edinburgh today.
With both teams forced to contend with very strong winds and a poor playing surface, football was rarely going to be the winner, making it unlikely that City would be able to repeat their 12-0 demolition of Boroughmuir at Glasgow Green, earlier on in the season.
As the game kicked off, with City playing against the gale, this looked likely to be the case, especially with Thistle packing the midfield and defence to prevent space for the away side.
Despite the wind and surface, making it almost impossible at times, City enjoyed all of the possession in the first half, but were unable to convert any of the few clear cut opportunities that came their way. The best chance of the first half fell to Jane Ross in the six yard box after she was set up by Kat Lindner, but the striker never got a clean touch on the ball and the Thistle defence cleared the danger.
Half time 0-0
In the second half, City continued to enjoy possession and with the wind advantage this time, created numerous opportunities against a hard working Boroughmuir.
City got off the mark within one minute of the re-start. Centre half, Jill Paterson played a good diagonal ball to Jane Ross wide on the left and the striker raced past the full back to set up Lindner, coming in from the right. City’s German born striker had her first effort saved by the Thistle keeper, but with the keeper only able to parry the shot back to the forward, Lindner then set up Sue Lappin, who flicked it into the net with the outside of her boot.
Within a few moments City doubled their advantage when Lappin headed home from an Emma Fernon corner.

Midfielder Megan Sneddon then struck number three and the goal of the day for the away side. Lappin dropped the ball back to Sneddon outside the box and the Scotland international hit a first time unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. A fantastic strike by the City midfielder, who is given stick regularly by her team mates for not shooting more often.
Ruesha Littlejohn was next on the scoresheet getting on the end of another Sue Lappin header. Lappin, who was winning everything in the air, then got a deserved hat-trick when she headed home from a Leanne Ross free-kick.
Littlejohn rounded off the scoring firing home number six with five minutes left to play.
Head Coach Eddie Wolecki was happy with his side’s win. He said, “To be honest, the park was a disgrace and if there is one thing that ruins a game of football it is the wind. The conditions made it difficult for us, but I knew as soon as we turned around for the second half, we would find it a lot easier and that proved to be the case. Places like this are never easy to come to, but to score six goals in one half and to have another clean sheet, with I don’t believe any attempts on our goal, is very pleasing. We now look forward to the visit of Raith Rovers next Sunday.”
